Each pattern starts with a New pattern event (65), whose value is the pattern number. The 1999 document describes patterns as step-sequencer data: note-on events with a step position and a family of “dot” events for the settings of each step. Later files store notes as records in a single pattern notes event instead. When that change happened within this era is not recorded.

|---|---|---|---|
| 0x01 (1) | Byte | Note on | A note on a step, with the step position as a byte. |

Step settings
The 1999 document lists one event per setting a step can carry. Their values are not described.
| ID | Size class | Name |
|---|---|---|
| 0x48 (72) | Word | Step volume |
| 0x49 (73) | Word | Step pan |
| 0x4D (77) | Word | Step note |
| 0x4E (78) | Word | Step pitch |
| 0x4F (79) | Word | Step mix |
| 0x57 (87) | Word | Step resonance |
| 0x58 (88) | Word | Step cutoff |
| 0x5C (92) | Word | Step shift |
Later readers treat IDs 72 and 73 as old forms of the channel volume and pan, so their meaning may have changed after 1999.
