A project from these versions has a single playlist, which places patterns along the song. There are no arrangements, tracks or time markers in any source for this era.

The playlist item event
In the 1999 format each pattern in the playlist is its own event 129, whose four bytes the document describes as a word position followed by a word pattern number. LMMS’s old importer reads the low word as the position in bars and the high word as the pattern number plus one.
| Offset | Size | Type | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 2 | u16 | Pos | Where the pattern is placed, in bars. |
| 2 | 2 | u16 | PatNum | The pattern number plus one. |
Later files in this era can use the many-item event 233 instead. Which version made the switch is not recorded, so a reader should accept both.
