.PRPROJ
Adobe Premiere Pro project
Introduction
A .prproj file is a project saved by Adobe Premiere Pro. It records the
whole edit: the bins of imported clips, the sequences, where each clip sits on the
timeline, and the transitions, titles, effects and audio settings applied to it.
The project holds no video or audio of its own. It refers to the media files by their paths on disk, so moving or renaming the media means Premiere Pro has to be told where to find it again. Projects saved by a newer version of Premiere Pro cannot be opened directly by an older one.
Software
- Adobe Premiere Pro (Windows, macOS)
- Adobe After Effects, which can import Premiere Pro projects (Windows, macOS)
- Adobe Media Encoder, which can render sequences from a project (Windows, macOS)
Structure
A Premiere Pro project is an XML document compressed with gzip, so the file starts with
the gzip signature 1F 8B. Decompressed, it is a large XML tree of
numbered objects that refer to each other by ID: the project, its bins and clips, the
sequences with their tracks and track items, and the references to media files. The
layout of this XML is not published by Adobe and changes between versions.
