Introduction
An .aep file is a project saved by
Adobe After Effects, the
motion graphics and compositing program. It holds the project panel of imported
footage, the compositions with their layers, keyframes, masks, effects and
expressions, and the render queue.
Like other editing projects, it refers to footage, images and audio by their paths
rather than containing them. After Effects can also save a project as XML with the
extension .aepx, which other tools can read more easily.
Structure
An AEP file is a RIFX file, the big-endian form of RIFF. It starts with the chunk ID
RIFX, a 32-bit big-endian size and the form type Egg!. Inside
are nested chunks and LIST chunks, each with a four-letter ID, a size and
the data. The meaning of the individual chunks is not published by Adobe.
