Introduction
PDN is the working file of Paint.NET, the free image editor for Windows. It keeps the picture’s layers with their names, opacity, blend modes and visibility, so the work can be edited again later.
The format is not published. Paint.NET is the only program that reads it fully; plug-ins for some other editors read the layers.
Structure
A PDN file starts with the ASCII signature PDN3, followed by the length
of a short XML header. The header gives the image size and the Paint.NET version and
carries a small thumbnail. The layers follow, stored in a layout tied to Paint.NET’s
own .NET code, with the pixel data compressed.
