Introduction
RAF is the raw photo format of Fujifilm’s digital cameras, including the X and GFX series. It holds the data from the camera’s sensor before any processing, with the camera settings and a JPEG preview.
Many Fujifilm cameras use X-Trans sensors, whose colour filters are laid out in a 6 by 6 pattern rather than the usual 2 by 2 Bayer pattern. A raw converter has to support that layout to develop the photo well. Fujifilm has not published the format.
Structure
Unlike most raw formats, RAF is not a TIFF file. It starts with the ASCII text
FUJIFILMCCD-RAW, followed by a format version, the camera model and a
table of offsets and lengths. These point to an embedded JPEG preview with the Exif
data, a block of Fujifilm’s own tagged metadata, and the raw sensor data, which in
many cameras is itself wrapped in a small TIFF structure.
