Introduction
A POTX file is a Microsoft PowerPoint template: a starting point for new presentations, with a theme, slide masters, layouts and sometimes example slides. Opening a template in PowerPoint creates a new, untitled presentation based on it rather than editing the template itself. Companies use templates to keep their presentations in a common style.
.potm is the same with macros, and the older binary equivalent is
.pot, described with PPT.
Structure
A POTX file is laid out exactly like a PPTX
package: a ZIP archive of XML parts holding the presentation, its slide masters in
ppt/slideMasters/, the layouts in ppt/slideLayouts/ and the
theme in ppt/theme/. The difference is the content type of the main part
in [Content_Types].xml, which is
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.template.main+xml.
